Living in a rural, remote or northern Canada area has many influences on women's health - yet little research has been done on this topic. In 2002 the Centres of Excellence for Women's Health conducted a national research study on the health of women living in rural, remote and northern Canada. The final report Rural, Remote and Northern Women's Health: Policy and Research Directions was released in June 2004.

Rural Women's Issues Committee of Saskatchewan

PWHCE continues to build on this early work with two Rural Women's Health Workshops in Young, Saskatchewan. At the workshops the women reviewed the national study recommendations and determined what issues were particularly relevant for them in their communities. They developed visions of what their communities would look like if the issues were resolved and identified actions to start achieving those visions.

The Rural Women's Issues Committee of Saskatchewan was formed from workshop participants to organize further opportunities for women to meet and discuss the well-being of themselves and their communities. RWICS Website.

Support from PWHCE and Status of Women Canada enabled the group to conduct Rural Women's Action Workshops in Nipawin, Swift Current, Unity and Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan.
