As part of its priority area of Gender in Health Planning, PWHCE has been supporting work related to midwifery to improve women’s access to midwifery care.

In 2004 PWHCE was a co-sponsor with the Atlantic Centre of Excellence in Women’s Health of a national conference in Halifax and recently published the Proceedings from THE MIDWIFERY WAY: A National Forum Reflecting on the State of Midwifery Regulation in Canada, July 22-23, 2004.

Work with groups concerned about midwifery, sponsoring public presentations about midwifery and communication with the public and policy-makers facilitated by PWHCE has helped promote the advancement of a policy on midwifery in Saskatchewan.

On November 7, 2005 the Saskatchewan Throne Speech announced the government's intent to proceed with implementing of midwifery and PWHCE will continue to play a role to ensure that this process leads to the best midwifery care services for women and their families and takes into consideration the diverse needs of the women of Saskatchewan.

PWHCE has provided advice and support to research on midwifery and to the development of the Aboriginal Midwifery Education Program in Manitoba.

PWHCE will continue to work to facilitate policy research and discussions about midwifery in the two provinces.
